Spending time with family is more important than ever! After the year that we collectively had in 2020, family has taken a front seat to other priorities.
And lucky for us, you don’t have to go far to find fun things to do with your loved ones — DeKalb County has some great family-friendly adventures. With museums, restaurants, outdoor adventures, and more — there is so much to do!
Here are 7 great ways to have a blast with your family in DeKalb County.
Open daily from 10 a.m. – 5 p.m., Fernbank Museum of Natural History is a fascinating attraction perfect for the entire family.
Science, nature, and fun meet here and create a world of magic waiting to be discovered and explored. With this one stop, you can travel around the world and back in time as you discover dinosaurs, live animals, amazing places, ancient fossils, prehistoric cultures, and new scientific discoveries.
Throughout the year, new exhibits and experiences offer even more to explore! For those with young kids, their indoor play area cannot be beat. Parking is free!
Other Must-Do Events at Fernbank:
- Giant Green Screen – Travel the world in the Giant Screen Theater with incredible movies on an immersive 4-story screen. Fernbank now offers 25-minute movies, allowing you to trade your passport for a movie ticket and discover the world through “edu-tainment”-style documentaries created for giant screen and IMAX theaters.
- Wildwoods and Fernbank Forest – The greatest show IS earth as you explore 75 acres of wow, including outdoor exhibits, breathtaking walking trails, a canopy walk, native wildlife, and nature playgrounds. Open year-round, rain or shine.
Arabia Mountain National Heritage Area
One of only three National Heritage Areas in the state of Georgia, Arabia Mountain National Heritage Area is beautiful, amazing, and fun to explore. (It’s the picture at the top of this article.)
Climb out of your comfort zone, get outdoors, and explore the 400 million years of history here.
Hike to the peak of Arabia Mountain (it’s not as hard as it looks!), see a host of wildlife and rare plant species, traverse the 30-mile paved Arabia Mountain PATH on foot or on wheels, and visit two granite monodnock (a residual hill or mountain) outposts.
This place is a favorite of my kids, and they’ve been able to “climb the mountain” since they were toddlers. You’ll be amazed at how close to the city this is — it feels like it’s a world away.
Starlight Drive-In Theatre
The past meets the present at the Starlight Drive-In Theatre, located off Moreland Avenue.
Four screens and an all-new digital projection system play today’s hottest movies as cars park amidst the theater’s classic art-deco style. The drive-in has been a community landmark since 1949, and you’ll be star struck with nostalgia when you catch a double feature any night of the week.
Stone Mountain Park
We couldn’t let a list about awesome family-friendly things to do in DeKalb pass without mentioning Georgia’s number one attraction — Stone Mountain Park!
There is so much to do here, that there is something for everyone in your family. Hiking, biking, paddle boarding, camping, kayaking, golf, train rides, and amazing views from the top of the mountain await you. (And don’t forget about that summertime LaserShow Spectacular!)
Located on 3,200 acres of natural beauty, discover interactive family-friendly attractions and countless natural and historical sights during a visit here.
DeKalb Peachtree Airport (PDK)
Want to learn to fly? You can at one of seven flight schools at DeKalb Peachtree Airport (PDK). Welcoming corporate jets, aircraft charters, personal planes, helicopters, and more, PDK is one of the region’s most important general reliever airports. Known as “Atlanta’s Gateway to the South,” it boasts 230,000 takeoffs and landings annually and is a can’t-miss destination for aviation enthusiasts.
Have kids? We highly recommend a visit to the playground here. The swings overlook the runway! How fun is that?! Your kids will love playing with planes taking off and landing nearby. There are also picnic tables, so bring lunch along and enjoy the day.
Tucker Brewing Company(TBC)
Kid friendly + perfect for a mid-day refresher and light bites, Tucker Brewing Company is an 8,500-square-foot beer garden located in Tucker, Georgia.
The largest of its kind in the State of Georgia, the Tucker Brewing beer garden is a beautiful outdoor space where guests can enjoy a myriad of beers (non-alcoholic drinks also available) and relax with family and friends.
Adjacent to the TBC indoor tasting room and brewery, the beer garden features seating areas, umbrellas, leafy trees, a 40-foot stage, cornhole and a play area for children. Four-legged friends are welcome!
