Have you considered a Murder Mystery Dinner date night before? Dan and I recently attended one in Atlanta as guests of The Murder Mystery Company, and it was SUCH a fun night. I won’t lie – I had my doubts…but I was overwhelmed with how enjoyable this comedy murder mystery dinner truly is.
I feel like a lot of people resort to “dinner and a movie” for date night because trying to plan an evening of excitement is just too much pressure.
A murder mystery dinner show takes only the 3 minutes necessary to make a simple reservation online– but it INCLUDES dinner and entertainment – the kind that gets you talking and giggling with your date…not just blankly staring up at a screen “together” for 2-3 hours.
As you arrive, you get your photo taken together (you don’t have to be as crazy and Dan and I were in the photo above), grab a seat with the other guests, order a drink from the bar, and settle in.
Our salad came right away, and we noshed as we learned about the other couples at our table. This was important because it turns out that we solve the murder as a team with the people we are sitting with…so don’t be shy. You’re working the room with these folks all evening – this is an interactive murder mystery game.
The people at our table were from all walks of life, and we became fast friends. (Hi Paula! Hi Stacey! And the nice professor and hygienist….hello out in Marietta!)
You’ll mingle around the room, interviewing “suspects” and gathering clues to bring back to the group. Be sure to talk to every suspect you can!
Who are the suspects?? They are other guests of the dinner theatre…not professional actors! In fact, I was a suspect. A “doctor” to the stars! (Was I the murderer?? Well, you have to attend your own dinner theater event to find out!)
After that, in comes the main meal.
Hubs went with lamb…I picked chicken….and our friends at the table selected the vegetarian option. The servings were HUGE and the food was really delicious. The venue is an actual Greek restaurant (not a hotel or meeting room, where the food has been trucked in) and it was really flavorful.
After dinner is cleared, you’ll hear more clues…see a few more scenes from the hosts…and then mingle again before coming together as team to solve the mystery!
Each table indicates who they think the murderer is…and why..and how…then gives their answers to the detective. You enjoy dessert as the answers are revealed and awards are presented!
Overall – FOUR thumbs up! Two from me and two from hubs. We had a great time; the food was awesome; the actors were not at all cheesy; the murder was complex, but not too hard; and we had a blast!
I highly recommend you put your next date night in the hands of the mystery party planning experts, and check out one of their upcoming events!
Answers to a few pressing questions
Where is the event??
Taverna Plaka is the restaurant used for the event. You’ll be seated in their large banquet room off the main dining room.
What about food allergy or preference issues?
We selected from lamb, chicken or vegetarian options. It included green beans and potato. You can ask about gluten-free and vegan options, also…they are very accommodating. Just be sure to let them know your concerns.
Is every show the same?
There is a new theme about every two months, and they have about 10 themes…so you can do this several times and enjoy a new perspective each time! It’s fun to experience it as a couple, and then go another time on a “double date” with friends.
What if I have a HUGE group of friends?
First, you should know the venue is pretty large, so they can accommodate a large group. But, I think it would be so cool to do this as a private party. They do offer private murder mystery dinners – you can even have one at your HOUSE! You just need at least 8 people, total, for the event (more is fine!)
How long is the show?
Our event lasted just under 3 hours, and that included the time to pay our bar tab and chat with the people at our table about how we should have picked the right murderer! Ha!
Do I need to bring cash?
There was no fee to park at the restaurant, and we showed our tickets at the door (which we purchased online ahead of time.) There is no need to tip the troupe and I didn’t see anyone doing it.
We did tip our waiter, as he was fantastic, worked his tail off, and brought us magic whiskey drinks quickly in a crowded space. We were able to do that on the bar tab ticket.
You also have an opportunity to buy the two photos they take as you walk in (that’s one of ours up at the top.) These are so cute, and EVERYONE wanted to buy theirs. I don’t think I saw anyone leave empty handed.
Bring cash for this photo, so that you can handle the transaction faster…or do what we did and leverage the VIP ticket. When you purchase your ticket, it will ask you if you want to upgrade. Say YES! The extra money is the same price as the photo ($20) and gets you the pictures for free…PLUS you get seated up front near the actors so it’s incredibly engaging.
The site says to come 30 minutes early. Is that necessary?
Yes! Do it! You will need to stand in line for them to check your tickets…then you get a photo…you will want prime seats near the front (if you are not VIP) and you can get a drink and mingle with the theatre troupe before the show! Come early, for sure!
