A Big Afternoon Adventure Searching for Tiny Doors Atlanta

I’ve been wanting to do a Tiny Doors Atlanta field trip ever since I read this article on cool art installations in the city. Tiny Doors checks so many of the boxes for a great field trip, that my son and I set out on Saturday to find a few before the rain came.

Tiny Doors ATL

There are so many reasons I love this public art project. First, it’s free. All but one of the doors are located in public areas.

Second, it’s a unique way to explore part of the city. While searching for doors, we also discovered another awesome find, the Krog Street Tunnel.

Third, it’s perfect for any age. Of course young children would love the miniature doors, but even my teenager was game for the hunt. He especially liked the door on Krog Street with an augmented reality app.

And finally, finding what most people pass by without noticing feels like you are in on some big secret, and opens up conversation with strangers also in the know.

What is the world is Tiny Doors ATL you ask? It’s a public art installation with 13 small doors (at press time, but more are in the works). Each door is only a few inches high, and all are hidden in plain site. Many of the doors are on or near the eastside trail of the Atlanta Beltline. We found four on our afternoon adventure and plan to go back to find the others too. Here is a Tiny Doors ATL map.

The doors are the brainchild of artist Karen Anderson, who is from Ann Arbor Michigan where tiny fairy doors are commonplace. The Atlanta doors however take on the persona of the larger establishment where you find them. For instance, the one at the Center for Puppetry Arts looks like the doorway of the actual theatre.
